How Does Learning Occur?

Learning occurs when a child makes a discovery and integrates that new knowledge with what he already knows and can apply. Each child makes such discoveries at her instructional level and according to his most comfortable learning style.

We have elected to define learning styles in terms of the seven intelligences described by Howard Gardner. Note: Although they are described separately, these learning styles are not separate entities. As a result, one activity may appeal to several types of learners.

The Verbal/Linguistic Learner enjoys reading, writing, and telling stories. He excels at memorizing the names of people and places, dates, and trivia. The verbal/linguistic learner learns best by saying, hearing, and seeing words.
The Logical/Mathematical Learner enjoys doing experiments, working with numbers, and exploring patterns and relationship. She excels at math, reasoning, logic, and problem-solving. The logical/mathematical learner learns best by categorizing, classifying, and working with abstract patterns.
The Visual/Spatial Learner enjoys drawing, building, designing, creating, daydreaming, and playing with machines. He excels at imagining things, sensing changes, solving mazes and working puzzles, and reading maps and charts. The visual/spatial learner learns best by visualizing, dreaming, and working with colors and pictures.
The Bodily/Kinesthetic Learner enjoys moving around, touching, talking, and using body language. She excels at sports, dancing, acting, and doing crafts. The bodily/kinesthetic learner learns best by touching and moving.
The Musical/Rhythmic Learner enjoys singing, humming tunes, listening and responding to music, and playing an instrument. He excels at picking up sounds, remembering melodies, noting pitches and rhythms, and keeping time. The musical/rhythmic learner learns best through rhythm, melody, and music.
The Intrapersonal Learner enjoys working alone and pursuing her own interests. She excels in focusing on internal feelings and dreams, following her instincts, and having original ideas. The intrapersonal learner learns best by taking part in individualized projects, engaging in self-paced instruction, and having her own workspace.
The Interpersonal Learner enjoys having lots of friends, talking to people, and joining groups. He excels at understanding people, leading others, organizing, and mediating conflicts. The interpersonal learner learns best by sharing, comparing, working in groups, and interviewing.
